First, you type (as in typing, not data type) your test and then you write the code. Then repeat. As it happens, depending on your level of familiarity with Ruby and the clarity of your perception of the problem you are trying to solve, typing a test that fails can be very non-trivial -- then implementing the method can feel like bicycling downhill.
