What if you static link with ruby like this:

# ruby 1.8.0
RUBY=$(HOME)/install/ruby-1.8.0
LIBS=$(RUBY)/libruby-static.a -lcrypt 

all:
	g++ main.cpp -I$(RUBY) $(LIBS) 


Does static linking work for you ?
