    OK, how about the methods taking a Regular Expression as a parameter
(converting strings as necessary), with nil defaulting to /[\s\t\r\n\f]/?
That would still allow "___xxx___".strip("_"), but could also allow
"<><<>>>><abc>><><>".strip(/[<>]/).
