Any suggestions? Yes - read 'man ruby' :-) -l enables automatic line-ending processing, which means to firstly set $\ to the value of $/, and secondly chops every line read using chop!. I don't think that's what you wanted; "mysql.so" is then being treated as a Ruby script (text file). Try: ruby -r mysql Or in irb: require "mysql" Regards, Brian.
