Have any odd control characters found their way into those
gaps after -march=athlon ??  For each of the three occurrences,
mkconfig has generated -

'CFLAGS=-O2 -march=athlon ' '' ''
'CXXFLAGS=-O2 -march=athlon ' '' ''
'FFLAGS=-O2 -march=athlon ' '' ''
