The 'formatoptions' option deals with this. r Automatically insert the current comment leader after hitting in Insert mode. o Automatically insert the current comment leader after hitting 'o' or 'O' in Normal mode. e.g. set formatoptions+=r set formatoptions-=o There's other bits for automatic formatting of comments, but that's another issue.
