Subject: Problem compiling mysql-ruby

hello

I just downloaded mysql-ruby-2.4.4

and I can not compile it:

ruby extconf.rb --with-mysql-config
checking for mysql.h... yes
creating Makefile
extconf.rb:33: uninitialized constant CPP (NameError)



I have ruby 
ruby 1.8.0 (2003-03-03) [i686-linux]
and MySQL 4.0.12 on RedHat 7.3


any ideas what is wrong here ?
