i've been checking them out too, as i'm the process of creating a pda app.
the thing with java j2me however, is the whole write once run anywhere thing.
it's amazing how lame the whole setup is though - for instance there are no
free db impl's for j2me (like PointBase).  it could rocket ruby into the
limelight if it

  a) could be byte compiled or had a sufficiently fast (trimmed down) interpreter
  b) ports existed for palm, pocket pc, linux (pda), etc

seems like this may even be possible since it doesn't have 'Sun - try to sue
us' tatoo'd on it like j2me...
