Actually, these variables are thread-local in Perl too:

  use strict;
  use threads;
  
  "foo" =~ /(\w+)/;
  print($1, "\n");
  threads->new(sub {
  	       "bar" =~ /(\w+)/;
  	       print($1, "\n");
  	     })->join;
  print($1, "\n");

prints:
  
  foo
  bar
  foo
