Subject: Thoughts on a webcounter

Hello, all.

The webcounter concept is something that has been 
done over and over.

Maybe it's not worth doing again. I'm thinking
about it (may not ever get around to doing it)
and I wonder what people think.

If I were designing a webcounter CGI, these
are the features I'd give it:

- ability to reset to zero or a specific number
- optional autoreset based on passage of time
- option to count hits or unique IPs (this becomes
  a little more tricky)
- identify a counter by domain name and an identifier
- password-protect so people don't monkey with each
  other's counters?
- option to return as text or graphical (via RMagick)
- formatting options (and fonts for graphical mode)
- option to add dates/times and so on
- periodic-logging option so as to be able to retrieve
  trends, etc.

But then some of this treads on the domain of the 
web log analyzer, I guess.
