You should have typed "~/jfn", not "~jfn":

dcarrera ~ $ touch jfn
dcarrera ~ $ ls ~jfn
~jfn: No such file or directory
dcarrera ~ $ ls ~/jfn
/home3/dcarrera/jfn
dcarrera ~ $ irb
>> File.split("~/jfn")
=> ["~", "jfn"]
>> File.join(File.split("~/jfn"))
=> "~/jfn"

And /home/dcarrera/jfn == ~/jfn
