How are things with support for more than 8 colors in ncurses-ruby ?

I ran 'puts(Ncurses.COLORS.to_s + " " + Ncurses.can_change_color?.to_s)'
on a terminal that supports more than 8 and got "8 false".

Does that mean I am restricted to 8 colors ?
