 No, but the httpd server expect to receive a result.

 #exec execute the command and terminate the cgi-script, for example

pigeon% cat b.rb
#!/usr/bin/ruby
exec "ls > /dev/null"
puts "END"
pigeon%
 
pigeon% b.rb
pigeon%  

 if #exec don't send some output, the server will give an error
