YAML looks pretty neat.  It's simple enough for an introductory tutorial.  
I can just teach the student:

# Save addressbook
File.open("file.yaml", "w").puts address_book.yaml

# Open addressbook
address_book = YAML::load( File.open("file.yaml") )
