(e. g. http://raa.ruby-lang.org/list.rhtml?name=RGL) I noticed that people tend to avoid using graph libraries because in most cases you can get around that by combining hashtables or similar strategies. Most graph libraries provide easy to use iterator interfaces to encapsulate the underlying graph representation. In my opinion it's best to become familiar with using graphs. If you use them with simple problems it's a lot easier to adopt them to difficult ones. I'm afraid this is no anwer to Brian's question but it might(?) be an important observation in general.
