If you reimplement "+", "+=" is reimplemented as well:

>> class Fixnum
>>     def +(other)
>>         return 5
>>     end
>> end
=> nil
>> 1 + 1
=> 5
>> var = 1
=> 1
>> var += 1
=> 5
