Subject: How to specify a record delimiter in a source text file?

All-

Please advise as to how I can deliniate end-of-records by something other than the default hard-return.

I know how to read in records with tab-delimited fields (with a hard return after the last field) using this technique:

  IO.foreach("./control/packages.txt") { |x|
    field = x.chop.split('\t')
    #do_stuff_here
  }

What I'd like to do is read in records that include one or more hard-return, even (but not preferably) if this means that the record is one large field.
