 Try to see how your gcc was compiled. just create

nasun% cat a.c
main() {}
nasun% 

 then compile it with

  gcc -v a.c

 and see if it call /usr/css/bin/{as,ld} or /usr/local/bin/{as,ld}

 the version of "GNU ld" can be important.
