Well, I've pretty much given up on this, instead using:
page = `lynx -source ...` 

Sockets work fine for me using ruby 1.4.3 with Mark Espie's patches.  I dug
around in ext/socket and openbsd manpages for a while but with no luck.
Hopefully this is something that can be fixed soon.
