echo adds a newline to the end of the string it's echoing.  Use -n to
omit it:

$ echo -n hello | md5sum
5d41402abc4b2a76b9719d911017c592  -

$ ruby -e 'require "md5"; puts MD5.md5("hello")'
5d41402abc4b2a76b9719d911017c592
