And my point in focusing on setting up a newbie section in a forum, or as a mailing list, is that it can function as a opening door for many newcomers. Meeting programming for the first time might be scary for many when the technical level is too high on a list. Learning by doing is a fine thing, and getting advice from people who has done it before at the same time is even better. I think that is much of the base for the popularity of Perl and Python. The communities include the whole spectre, also focusing on the beginners, somewhat in opposition to LISP and Smalltalk. Ruby is a great starting language. The clue is to spread the message, and have a channel to help out the new ones too.
