Is the class at the given URL any use at all in this debate?

Its size is 
   lines     words  characters

It assumes that the version numbers are numeric only, but it makes no 
assumptions about how many of the smaller units make up the bigger ones,
so one cannot do subtractions with it.

It could be used, conceivably, for dates (2000.10.6.18.16.32) or even
pounds, shillings and pence :-)
