I'm busy packing up my many books (in preparation for moving to north Virginia), and just came across Wolfram's Theory and Application of Cellular Automata, published in 1986. I guess it was around that tine I was discovering CAs and artificial life, and just got hooked. I did some CAs using Basic, but man were they S L O W.
