I am sorry, I am not trying to represent Matz.  But if I am allowed to
guess from what I have heard/read and experience myself, Ruby was created
initially as a "Perl replacement" and along the way it absorbed all the
good things from many other computer languages.

The motivation behind R, for me personally, is really as a "faster Ruby",
by sacrificing a little bit (hopefully) the programmer's convenience.
