Well, it could be seen as a function or mapping as well, in which case:

subimage
subrange
apply
map_to

The latter being reinforced by it being sort of a reversed way of 
calling #map on an array of indices:

[2,5,7].map {|i| a[i]} == a.map_to(2,5,7)

Other wacky ideas:

I think gather sounds natural, but maybe it'd be assumed to be an alias of 
#collect.  (?)
