Couldn't it just depend on a C compiler with configurable settings - Ruby configuration seems to know about this. Wrt. security - that could be optional if it's a matter of running Windows or not. If it has to be gcc, MingW works fine and doesn't use Cygwin. Cygwin is not nice to have running by comparison. Mikkel
