a colleague of mine tried to write an RTF parser a few years ago,
going into SGML, IIRC.  despite having the spec and knowing the dragon
book inside out, he ended up giving up, after spending a good long
while on it.  i think there's a few things in there which can't be
parsed 'normally'.  

i can't get details about this at present, cos he's on hols.  will ask
him later if there's any interest.
