When I started to convert my network simulator from the prototype in Ruby to C, I got 10 times increase in efficiency. The only thing hindering me from increasing it even further is the current Ruby simple mark and sweep garbage collector. I am really looking forward to the next generational gc. On the other hand, if you already wrote purely in C (independent of the Ruby object model), I think you have got the fullest extent of comparison between Ruby and C performance. (Well, if it is mostly numerical, probably Fortran will make it even faster? :) I just stop here, one step short of mentioning assembly.)
