If you want a pure Ruby reporting engine, see http://datavision.sourceforge.net. True, the recent versions are in Java, but the earliest versions are perfectly good working Ruby. It can output LaTeX (thus PDF if you run pdflatex), HTML, comma- and tab-separated, and more.
