A remembered set is a set of pointer locations that record which pointers
point into a generation, usually from a younger generation.

Usually in a generational system, you want to modify the remembered set when
any of these pointers are changed (written, hence write-barrier).  This is
commonly done using hardware memory protection facilities provided by the
OS.

At least that's my take on it. :-)
