I think that some of the 'must-haves' are:

* 'ri' and/or Ruby in a nutshell by `matz' (reference guides)

* Programming Ruby, by Dave Thomas & Andy Hunt (a book to begin with)

* The Ruby Way, by Hal Fulton (advanced topics)

All of them are excellent resources which worths a lot more than their
cost (some of them are free, btw).

PS: Maybe you can consider "Ruby Developer's Guide" too ... but I can't
    tell anything more specific about it - I didn't opened that one, yet.
    Still enjoying 'The Ruby Way' ... :)
