Why is the first line ok, but the second line is not?

ruby -e 'p (( [1].each do puts "hello" end ))'
hello
[1]

ruby -e 'p ( [1].each do puts "hello" end )'
/tmp/rba009O9:1: parse error
p ( [1].each do puts "hello" end )
               ^


I use ruby 1.4.5 (2000-06-26) [mips-irix6.5]
