Subject: What is the EIO error?

Hi there,
 
I meet a problem when I try to read an input character from keyboard in a 
subprocess; the error message is :ERRNO:EIO.a 
part of my code is as follow: 
fork{f=STDIN.GETC
 while not(f==101) 
..... 
..... 
end 
} 
Anyone can tell me what's wrong with my code? And how to fix it? Where I can 
find the description of the error? Thanks.
