Subject: Which C compiler required to build extensions for Ruby 1.6.6 Windows binary distribution?

I'd like to install the RubyCurl extension into the Hunt/Thomas
Windows binary Ruby distribution. Does this mean that I need to install
Visual C / Visual Studio .NET ? Is there anyway of using my cygwin gcc
for this?

Which is the most popular Windows Ruby - the prebuilt Hunt/Thomas 1.6.6
or using cygwin and building from source?
