Tomas,

For ISO-8859-1 to UTF8 conversion, you can do:

        utf8 = iso88591.unpack('C*').pack('U*')

Other encodings are more difficult, depending on the encoding.

Ruby will soon have m18n (i18n?  I can never tell them apart.) support, but 
right now you have to do the conversions by hand.
