That's the problem -- I /can't/ reliably reproduce the error.  It comes and 
goes.  If I take the exact same code to my laptop, it works. :-/

In any case, I've made some changes to the code, and now the problem has 
disappeared.  I even put the /.../ syntax back in (and took out the 
Regexp.new call) and it still works.

If, and when, it crops up again, I'll take a snapshot of the code and send 
it to you, along with the ruby runtime information.
