Subject: is this a bug or is it behavior of which I am not aware?

using prag programmers distro:

15:47:27 ~
% ruby
puts [].find( '() -').inspect
-:1:in `find': compile error (SyntaxError)
-:1: parse error
        from -:1
15:47:47 ~
% ruby
puts [].find( '() ' ).inspect
nil
15:48:05 ~
% ruby -v
ruby 1.6.4 (2001-06-04) [i386-cygwin]
15:48:15 ~
%

Note the strange behavior with [].find( '() -').  Is this a known bug?
