Subject: Marshal error: "singleton can't be dumped"

I'm trying to dump an object with Marshal.dump, but it gives me the 
error "singleton can't be dumped." What does it mean by singleton in 
this context? The object I want to dump isn't a singleton in the way 
I understand the pattern -- there's no special control over number of 
instances, or anything like that. It's a pretty normal object, 
actually.
