A web server, by itself cannot change the page once it's been rendered. There are attempts to make JavaScript more palatable (CoffeeScript, ClojureScript, etc), however I highly recommend becoming comfortable with JavaScript (and possibly a helper like jQuery) BEFORE using any of these, as with any of these it's still important to understand what's happening under the hood.
