I usually use 'hashie' gem for this kind of stuff eg.

class Hash
  include Hashie::Extensions::SymbolizeKeys
end

or,

  class Hash
    include Hashie::Extensions::MergeInitializer
    include Hashie::Extensions::IndifferentAccess
  end
etc.
