did you finally understand the difference between capitalize and 
capitalize! and why

this works:
newstr =""
a = "hello world".split(//).each{ |x| newstr << x.capitalize }

but this does not?
newstr =""
a = "hello world".split(//).each{ |x| newstr << x.capitalize! }


??
