I suggest that a list of known working platforms be created off:
http://www.ruby-lang.org/en/index.html
with maybe hints for difficult cases.

Actually, many other languages have stuff in the FAQ about building
on different platforms, sometimes with a list of supported ones.  Knowing
it can be done may attract more users....
