yeah, these scare me to.  especially b/c it could have be implemented
in a way that would be easier to test.

I agree with much of what you say, but not this.  Maybe I'll stick it
into narf later.

I suggest that you fork cgi.  We could then see what we have in
common, and dub those spots design perfection :-)
