Hmm.  Still doesn't help me much with regard to mswin32 unless
it's trivially easy to build.  Maybe I'll try it ...

Thanks for the patch!  Until it makes its way into stable, or
until I get motivated to try building from CVS, I'll have to
live with my work-around using pipes and IO#select to fake it.
