But you could add a few lines, couldn't you?  Why not

irb(main):001:0> class String
irb(main):002:1> def to_v
irb(main):003:2> scan(/\d+/).map(&:to_i).extend Comparable
irb(main):004:2> end
irb(main):005:1> end
=> nil
irb(main):006:0> "2.6.3".to_v > "2.6.28".to_v
=> false
