Ahh...  well, if that's the case:

out = `cp file1 dir2/file1`
if !out.empty?
  puts "Something bad happened..."
end

Copy or move?  Same filesystem?  Could you use File.link?

How about:

require 'ftools'
File.copy 'orig', 'new'


That should raise the appropriate exceptions along the way too... -sc
