 Well, try this

   def collapse_path(p, m)
      if %r{^([^\0]*/)([^\0]+)(?:/|\z)[^\0]*\0\2(.*)} =~  m + "\0" + p
         $1+ $2 + $3
      else
         m + "/" + p
      end
   end

 but verify it :-))
