Yea. That really does make sense. The solution in standard_ruby.rb is 
clean and simple and by disabling GC, this one was also accepted on 
codechef (it showed 13.12 seconds). I also changed 'readline' to 'gets' 
and it took 13.00 seconds. :)
Maybe 'gets' is faster than 'readline'.
