Do not get confused!

You can access characters within a string with []

Do you have IRB?

If not, install it.

If yes, use it.

Start IRB do this:

x = "foobar"
x[0..3] # => "foob"
x.upcase[0...-1] # => "FOOBA"

Within the [] you specify a range or the start/end position for the 
character.
