This code should really read like this:

base =3D '/usr/include'
prefixes =3D ['', 'sys/']
file =3D 'mntent.h'

prefixes.each { |p|
  path =3D base + '/' + p
  $CFLAGS << ' -I' << path if have_header path + file and p.length > 0
}
